As we head deeper into autumn, do you notice how the natural world contracts and draws inward, sheltering its vitality underground? This the time of year when it’s natural to shed, to return to our core. In going deeper inside, we can also travel back in time. Our deepest torso muscles began developing their strength in infancy, and it is these muscles that must continue to hold us upright as adults.
In our current world, with our focus constantly externalized, many of us have abandoned our core. Living without a sense of our own center results in pervasive discomfort and dissatisfaction in our bodies or lives, along with reduced internal organ function and a host of associated health problems. In this continuation of Movement Fundamentals, we’ll begin reclaiming the strength of our axis through the exploration of movement without limbs.
Yes, this is experimental. It is also healing. Ask yourself this: if abandonment of our core is an underlying cause of many modern problems, how important is it to get it back? Is it worth trying something totally new? Is it worth spending an afternoon on the floor learning to move like an inchworm? How to flip like a fish? How to walk with no legs? Is it worthwhile, even, to have a little fun with it all? Because this workshop is about play. It’s about returning to what we knew as children: that there are far more possibilities on this earth than the linear life trajectories we have been taught to follow. In the core of our bodies lies the potential for pleasure and new possibilities, and play is how we regain access to it all.
By the way, you will also be using muscles you never knew you had, so come prepared for a gentle workout! As usual, movements can be adapted to a wide variety of bodies. If you have any concerns about your physical ability to participate, please contact me.
This class is open to students who have taken Movement Fundamentals: Walking. If you would like to receive updates regarding new classes and future offerings, please sign up to receive our newsletter!
