First we learn to stanD

your body matters

The way you stand matters. Your stance in your body reflects your experience and impacts your stance in the world.

Most of us weren’t taught how to inhabit our bodies with awareness and skill. Living in a largely sedentary society, we don’t get much practice with how to move.

If you want more connection to your body, more confidence in your movement, more embodied joy in being alive on this planet…

welcome to Confident Ground

Where we restore our relationship with body from the ground up

What we Offer

Classes

We teach functional movement with an emphasis on the body as a biological organism rather than a brain-dominated machine. Much of our intelligence lives in our bodies, and the information we receive through our senses. When we’re constantly up in our heads, we’re not connecting to our bodies through the direct experience of physical sensation. The body starts getting tight and stiff, and we’re busy thinking about other things. We might miss important cues the body is sending us about our health. Movement reintroduces us to sensation, the language bodies use to communicate. Movement generates circulation, which allows blood to better nourish and oxygenate our tissues and remove wastes. When tissues become healthier, the body relaxes. When we feel relaxed, we find more joy.

If you spend a lot of time at a desk — or do physical labor that puts excessive strain on certain areas — you can benefit from classes in gentle, holistic movement. Our methods are based in Chinese arts such as Qi Gong along with contemporary modalities that develop sensory awareness of the body core, improve fluid circulation, and nourish the nervous system.

Inhabiting your body is the first step in developing more functional movement. And functional movement is the foundation for everything you do or want to do in your body for the rest of your life.

Private Sessions

As many of us know from experience, lack of movement often results in chronic tension, muscle weakness, reduced coordination, poor posture, and even impacts mental health. It may be difficult to motivate yourself to exercise if you don’t feel comfortable in your body or your movements. Our assisted dynamic stretching sessions restore neurological connections between brain and body while rebuilding muscle and improving the alignment of your fascia. These enhancements in tissue health result in increased range of motion, coordination, and flexibility as well as helping you regain a balanced posture for optimal enjoyment of your favorite physical activities and greater ease in daily tasks.

We also offer fluid movement sessions to increase your sensory awareness of the 60% of you that is water. Learning to consciously inhabit this fluidity increases resilience — your ability to process and adapt to change — because it places you in direct contact with the constant biological movement happening inside. Trauma and injuries can inhibit the flow and distribution of fluids within the body’s tissues, and subtle, gentle movement helps restore this crucial circulation. Our bodies continually renew themselves and adapt to our experiences and environments, and the more we are able to relax into and trust these natural processes, the more confident we become in moving forward into our lives.

Who we are

Confident Ground is owned and managed by me, Georgia Mitchell. A lifelong northwesterner, my background includes a decade of study in Qi Gong and Chinese medicine principles, alongside many years in restoration and horticulture. What originally attracted me to Chinese medicine was its fundamental understanding of the human body as an extension of its environment. The minerals that make up our bones and nourish our blood are derived from the earth that grows our food. Similarly, the health of the body is largely dependent upon the free circulation of fluids throughout the tissues, much the way that rivers provide nutrients to farmland in traditional agricultural systems.

One way we care for the body is to ensure healthy circulation of fluids through its tissues, and we improve circulation through movement. When we experience greater freedom in our body’s capacity to move and feel ourselves grounded in the larger ecology that sustains us, confidence is a natural result. This understanding is the basis for everything we do at Confident Ground.
